Multiprotocol Label Switching Definition Continued.

The best MPLS networks are facilitated within the closed systems of tier 1 providers. With this scenario, MPLS networks are as secure as point-to-point private lines but far more functional and less expensive. With quality of service (QoS), MPLS is extremely well suited for transmitting voice, priority files, multiple location audio or video conferencing, or high quality video transmission. For two location networks, a point-to-point private line continues to be a bit less expensive than a MPLS network. However, point-to-point lines are not commonly managed by providers, so with point-to-point lines, obtaining customer premise equipment, and configuring and maintaining the equipment is the responsibility of the end user. For multiple location networks, or two location networks which you know will increase in number of locations, multiprotocol label switching can be far more functional, and far less expensive than a network comprised of point-to-point lines. In most cases, full T1 or DS3 MPLS networks are provided with all needed hardware and installation, configuration and management of the network by the provider for about the same cost, or just slightly more, per location, than managed internet service. T3 or DS3?

In the context of telecommunications, the terms T3 and DS3 are often used synonymously to describe a 45 mbps (megabits per second) circuit. A T3/DS3 is the equivalent of 28 T1s. People who are more technically inclined will often refer to DS3 when they are talking about the configuration of the circuit, and T3 if they are referring to the physical connection which carries the circuit. Most people, however, use both terms interchangeably. T3/DS3 is used for carrying both voice (in the form of data) and data traffic. T3/DS3 is commonly used for larger point-to-point circuits, MPLS (multiprotocol label switching), Virtual Private Networks (VPN), internet traffic, call centers, and videoconferencing.
